Long Answer Questions

7. Assuming yourself as Armando Gonzalez, retell the story "Fear" in about 200 words.

2074 Set A Q.No.4a

After I decided to buy a house, I went to the large bank of Mexico to withdraw 50,000 pesos. I was very careful from the beginning. The bank was slightly crowded that day and I did not like it. After I consented the bank teller to count he money, she started counting the money loudly which I did not like I got afraid that the other people would know that I was carrying a heavy amount I thought that they would take my money away.

I caught a bus to go home. There I met a man whom had already seen in the bank. Not only that I had dashed against him and he had given me a double look. I found the same man getting on the same bus. Now, there was no doubt that man intended to rob me. Everybody in the bus was looking at me only because I was putting my hat backwards but what thought was that they were looking at me because they had the knowledge that I was carrying 50,000 pesos started to see everyone a thief. This increased my nervousness all the more.

After some time, I found that the man was talking to three other boys. I thought that they were making secret plans to loot me. This heightened my nervousness and I made a plan to get off the bus at next stop and to take another bus from there and I did so accordingly

Suddenly, I also saw that the same three boys had got off there. Now, it was sure that it was a part of the robbery. I was panic stricken. I started to run shouting for help. The three boys also started to run after me only with the intention to help me. But there was no limit to my fear and I was running as fast as I could Suddenly my feet got entangled with something and fell down. Before I got up the three boys came up to me. I started to implore / beg / plead them not to rob me. They got surprised at it and said that they were not intending to loot me. Rather they were students and they were there for a football tournament and that they were running after me because I was shouting for help.

I got up and put my cap on and this time I put it rightly. At this time, we walked up slowly back to the street

"Fear', as supernatural story, discusses about the human fear, created from doubt and suspicion.

Armando Gonzalez and his wife Eva have collected 50,000 pesos by working hard for 20 years. They have planned to buy a beautiful house to live peacefully. So, Armando withdraws money from the bank in cash. The bank cashier counts money loudly, so all people standing in the bank look towards Armando. They are interested for the hat of Armando, which was mistakenly facing backward. Armando goes out and takes bus. But a heavy man who was there in the bank, also climbs in the bus and starts talking with three young boys. Armando suspects that they are planning to rob his money. So, he climbs down at the first station to save himself. Other three boys also climb down from the bus. Armando thinks that they are going to rob him. So, he runs fast crosses the road and yells loudly for help. Suddenly, he falls down and three boys catch him. Armando cries and requests them not to steal.

The boys get puzzled and tell him that they have been running behind him to help him. In reality they have been going for football tournament and climbed down from the bus because they had taken wrong bus. Armando does not believe his own eye. Finally, they walk together, Armando takes out his hands from money pocket and makes his hat straight.

This helps us to understand that the fear of Armando Gonzalez is an imaginary fear. As a man of weak psychology, he has developed fear without any rea basis. When the boys identify themselves and he uses his hands to correct his hats, he realizes perhaps that his fear was causeless.

10. Sketch the character of Armando Gonzalez [10]

2068 Q.No.4c

Armando Gonzalez Armando Gonzalez is the protagonist of the story. The whole story revolves around him. It starts when he enters in the large bank of Mexico to withdraw fifty thousand pesos of the money and ends when he puts his hat correctly. He is a realistic character. There are many Armando’s in our society who are the slaves of the poverty. Armando Gonzalez is such much afraid because he loves money. The money he has accumulated has his toil and top of his whole family. It is not the easy money collected by bribery and corruption. Thus, he represents thousands of other Mexicans who live a life of struggle and poverty.

Armando is a character of weak psychology. He develops a negative psychology and sees everything negative. He sees the image of a robber in every person. The world actually looks us the way we look at it. This is Armando's weakness. Next Armando is the victim of nervousness. Because he grows nervous everything turns worse than better. He keeps his hat backward because of nervousness, he slides in the bank door, he sweats all and over, his mouth goes dry and stomach aches and so on. He suffers because of this nervousness. He should have been confident He was not nervous he would not put his backward and everything would go normal.

While talking about him, be is a very hardworking man. He accumulates the money in twenty years. He has a work in shoe shop and his wife also helps him in the meaning. He has a good family of five children, a wife and a mother in law. Armando has a dream of having his own house as he lives in the small rented apartment. He is very simpleton in nature for example when three football tournament boys follow him and finally catch, he says everything I within a minute. Armando however lacks education He represents the illiterate Mexicans. He even doesn't know the difference between check and cash.

Over all Armando is a static character that is not seen changed. He of course deserves sympathy and love of the readers. But some of the time we get angry at him since he unnecessarily aggravates the situation. Al the same time we laugh at him and feel his nervousness at heart.
